Tenuta Martorina is a unique estate of considerable proportions (approximately 138 acres) situated on the plateau of Modica, almost 1000ft above sea-level, in the south-east of Sicily. Surrounded by a characteristic natural valley “Cava Martorina”, a prehistoric site abounding with holm oaks, sage bushes and other typical Mediterranean vegetation, the estate is of great interest both from a historical, cultural and geographical point of view, and for its vegetation and wildlife.
The farm buildings of Tenuta Martorina, officially recognised as part of the Italian national heritage, make a fascinating holiday home for both adults and children and the estate is also a fully working farm cultivating carub trees and olive trees and raising dairy cattle according to time-honoured tradition.
The layout of the property, built around an original medieval design, is that of the traditional Modican farm, characterized by the “baglio”, an extensive courtyard with a vaulted stone entrance at one end, the imperious early 18th century farmhouse at the opposite end, and farm-workers quarters and cattle stalls running down each side between the two. On the outside, incorporated in the external wall, is a small private church, still consecrated.
Tenuta Martorina lies within the fascinating territory of the ancient Noto Valley, designated as a World Heritage area by UNESCO in 2002. The area includes Modica, a town of ancient and noble traditions, Ragusa Ibla, stronghold of the local aristocracy, and Noto, the ‘pearl’ of Sicilian Baroque architecture. The entire estate is soon to be incorporated in the recently established Hyblean National Park.
From a naturalistic point of view, Tenuta Martorina offers a variety of unique excursions in the vicinity. These range from the “Cava d’Ispica” whose caves bear witness to prehistoric Siculan and Byzantine settlements, to the “Oasi di Vendicari”, a beautiful wildlife reserve on the south-east coast, fascinating for its flora and fauna and also for its vestiges of past human activities such as the “tonnara” (tuna fishing) which goes back to the ancient Greek period, the “saline” (marine saltworks) and the “Swabian” tower.
The beaches of S. Maria del Focallo and Pozzallo are only a short distance away and the port of Pozzallo provides a daily ferry service to the island of Malta.
Horse-riding is available at a distance of 5 km and there is also a golf course at a distance of 50 km.
Tenuta Martorina is an ideal location for holiday-makers who are seeking the tranquillity of the countryside and the rediscovery of ancient traditions, without renouncing the pleasures of the seaside, day-trips and visits to historical sites.
